The Seal Lullaby

I was incredibly excited, said yes, and took the meeting. I wrote it down as quickly as I could, had my wife record it while I accompanied her at the piano, and then dropped it off at the film studio. Each member of the choir recorded their part separately, then submitted them to Whitacre and Producer Scott Haines, who mixed the recordings together, then created an accompanying video. Part of this process is simply about using Twitter to open up the process of composition to public view. Kipling visited South Africa during the Boer War, editing a newspaper there and writing the Just-So Stories. Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow, Oh weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease! When I was small and not so small my father read to us. Was it too melodically complex? The White Seal is a beautiful story, classic Kipling, dark and rich and not at all condescending to kids.

Doesn't make it any less beautiful. Oh hush thee, my baby The night is behind us And black are the waters that sparkled so green The moon o'er the combers looks downward to find us At rest in the hollows that rustle between Where billow meets billow Then soft be thy pillow Ah weary wee flipperling Is curled at thy ease The storm shall not wake thee Nor shark overtake thee Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging sea Where billow meets billow Then soft by thy pillow Ah weary wee flippering Is curled at thy knees The storm shall not wake thee Nor shark overtake thee Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas. I wrote it down as quickly as I could, had my wife record it while I accompanied her at the piano, and then dropped it off at the film studio. As the composer tells the story, he was enjoying the success of his piece for the musical theater Paradise Lost when he received a quick commission from a film studio, asking for his music in a proposed animated setting of 's The White Seal. Thanks for your help out there. This poem is beautiful, memorable, and finely crafted. Was it too melodically complex? The other, non-illustrated, books were easier.

He became a great mentor and friend to the show and, I am honored to say, to me personally. Did they even listen to it? Poetry lets us peek beneath the veil of the everyday world for a glimpse of the transcendence available in our most commonplace moments. He returned to India at the age of seventeen to work as a journalist and editor for the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore. Even though it doesn't have as much of the dissonance he employs in his other songs, its sound is heavenly and the lyrics are magical. Something about summer gales and killer whales.

The workshop is the brainchild of legendary composer Wicked , Godspell , and his insights about the creative process were profoundly helpful. One of the books my father read us was The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling, although there were some stories he skipped over, considering them too ruthlessly Darwinian for small children. It begins with a cautionary tale about swimming too far on your own, while you're still a baby. Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. Finally, I called them, begging to know the reason that they had rejected my tender little song. Although Kipling can be trite or cliched, I thinkhis poetic skills are underappreciated. He read Canticle for Liebowitz, and early Heinlein space operas, and books of Pogo cartoons.

Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. In junior high, when I began to copy poems I loved into the back of my journals, it was one of the first poems I copied. And a few years later the graciously commissioned this arrangement of it. I wrote this piece such that it would be playable for me yet still push my abilities. The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas! It took a commission several years later from and the for The Seal Lullaby to finally be completed in its current form for choral singers, and gratefully dedicated the piece to that conductor. All mothers are the same, Kipling seems to say, whether they rock their babies to sleep in wooden rockers or between ocean waves. This is actually the very first piece of music I ever wrote.

Did they even listen to it? Don't grow up too fast and enjoy yourselves. He became a great mentor and friend to the show and, I am honored to say, to me personally. The poem has an affectionate, dreamlike quality particularly suited to a lullaby. Soon after the workshop I received a call from a major film studio. I was struck so deeply by those first beautiful words, and a simple, sweet Disney-esque song just came gushing out of me. Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas! His friendship and invaluable tutelage has meant more to me than I could ever tell him.

I hope someone does a good recording of it so I can take it around with me instead of constantly having to listen to it off of MySpace. As this is the first piece of music I ever wrote, it's only fitting I adapt it into MuseScore, where people can easily listen to it and hopefully download and even perform it. Finally, I called them, begging to know the reason that they had rejected my tender little song. Was it too melodically complex?
