The Opposite Zoo

From the creator of A Book of Sleep and A Book of Babies comes a beautiful new book of animals-and opposites! With older kids you could integrate this with a fun activity on animals, with toddlers it's a great pick for talking about animals, colors, and adjectives and for Mother Goose time it would be a good introduction to adjectives and animals as well. We get to know these animals relatively well in the short moments we spend with them, and it's the warmth of the illustrations that helps us generate such a connection to the beautiful animals on the page. I usually enjoy Il Sung Na, and I liked this book as well as his previous titles. Opposite animals don't necessarily stay on their own pages, but rather everything weaves in and out of each other, adding multiple layers of colors and texture. Na brings fresh energy to the familiar. I wanted to illustrate this book in a different way, not in the same way I have done so far.

Every bit of every spread is engulfed in color, and Na experiments with colorful highlights to accentuate his images. Each page is a glorious wonder. Filled with energetic illustrations, friendly animals, and a simple text, T he Opposite Zoo is a fun and lively introduction to animals and opposites. I don't particularly care for the framing of the monkey who explores the zoo when the cage to his door is left open, but everything else about the book has high appeal and would provide a great way to introduce this particular concept as well as have students discuss the characteristics of the various animals highlighted here. Follow the monkey as he visits all the animals in the zoo: fast and slow, big and small, noisy and quiet, soft and prickly! Looking at a zoo at nighttime has never been more bright and inviting. The Opposite Zoo is an early concept picture book about a curious monkey who escapes his cage one night after the zoo closes. From the creator of A Book of Sleep and A Book of Babies comes a beautiful new book of animals--and opposites! With a coloring style that feels as if someone took a firecracker to a box of crayons, Na makes turtle shells as dynamic as a peacock's plumage.

I could easily see asking children to point out the various types of animals featured during a storytime, as well as exploring the colors in a one-on-one setting. But this one was different. Follow the monkey as he visits all the animals in the zoo: fast and slow, big and small, noisy and quiet, soft and prickly! They act and behave like children sometimes. Because our review copy was an unbound galley, I couldn't share it with Miss Muffet very easily, but we did read it a couple of times, and she really loved the artwork. Even though the concept of opposites has been on my wish list for a long time, I did not know where to begin. So be brave, be bold, be creative and most importantly enjoy. Scribbly and bright and endearing. When I figured how to start and end the story, that was the moment that my brain clicked.

The Opposite Zoo

There are very few words on each page and the words used are typical sight words. I wish I could give The Opposite Zoo 10 stars. I struggled the first week to get it right, but once I figured it out, everything came at once. I wanted more free-form lines and shapes in contrast to my previous illustrations. If anyone remembers spin art from fairs and amusement parks during the 70's-it has that bright, helter skelter, original quality but in a professional manner. His stories seem to be pretty simple but they always explore a theme animal habitats, opposites so they're perfect for kids who are learning vocabulary and kids who are starting to learn conversation I don't know what age that is.

The Opposite Zoo

This book examines the idea that not everything is the same. So I ended up with a zoo. Although it took more than a year until the book actually published, I really enjoyed the whole process and I felt everything went so quickly. And I skipped my regular process of revising the story, revising thumbnail sketches several times, shifting the whole layout back and forth. So using ink-my long time favorite materials-was a risk: the effects had the potential to go astray with this new method. Unlike many traditional opposite books, Na isn't afraid to play with the space on the page.

She wanted to look carefully at each picture, and she wanted to know the names of the animals and make their sounds. Idea Sketches What was the timeline between spark and publication and what were the major events along the way? How can you not want to open this book?! With a coloring style that feels as if someone took a firecracker to a box of crayons, Na makes turtle shells as dynamic as a peacock s plumage. He goes to see the other animals in the zoo, which are described in pairs of opposite textures, colors, and sizes. Of course there were many things to be discussed and revised, like adding the monkey character to lead the whole story. Making this book an easy beginning reading book for toddlers. I jumped straight into color illustrations once the idea was polished. I am so excited about this book.
